Light rail line 15 has also run through campus since October 2023. It connects Otaniemi to Tapiola and the rest of Espoo every six minutes on weekdays.

Daily life runs through A Bloc, the shopping centre attached to the metro station. You'll find K-Market and Alepa for groceries, a pharmacy, Alko, and a gym there. The restaurant row is solid too — Konnichiwa for sushi, Fafa's, Eat Poke, and Espresso House among them. A Bloc is genuinely the social hub of campus, not just a mall bolted on beside it.

Food is one of the better perks of student life in Finland. Registered higher-education students get subsidised lunches — called opiskelijalounas, or student lunch — for a maximum of €3.10 as of 2026. Just show your student card at the till to claim the Kela meal subsidy. Campus restaurants like the Fazer-run canteens in A Bloc make heavy use of it.

Finding Housing in Otaniemi

Three broad paths lead to housing here, and each suits a different kind of stay.

AYY apartments — Aalto's student union owns unfurnished apartments in Otaniemi and Leppävaara, with rents starting around €300/month. They're excellent value. You do need to be an AYY member with a valid study period, and you apply through their system. Most units are unfurnished, which works well for degree students and less well if you're arriving for one semester with a suitcase.

Reserved exchange-student housing — Aalto reserves a limited number of furnished rooms near campus for incoming exchange students. Rent runs roughly €400/month, including furniture, utilities, and often laundry and sauna access. Deposits run around €500.

What Is Vappu?

If there's one date to know, it's April 30th and May 1st. Vappu is the biggest event of the student year in Finland. Otaniemi's teekkarit, or technology students, spell it "Wappu."

Weeks of pranks, sitsit dinners, and a declaration of "Wappu rowdiness" — shouted from the roof of Servin Mökki — lead up to the big day. First-years earn their tasselled student caps at midnight. The timing matches the tradition of capping the Havis Amanda statue at Helsinki's Market Square. A Bloc joins in too, with flower leis and face-painting in the days leading up to it.

However short your stay in Otaniemi, timing it around Vappu is worth considering. Vappu is the closest thing to a passport stamp for research life and student life in Finland.
